So, yesterday we untied from outside the Moorings pub and crossed the marina to fill up with diesel. Marina owner Dave scrambled across the two boats we were breasted with and managed to get 103 litres in. He was impressed with my guess of 107 before he started, but I was more impressed when he said he'd only charge me for 100. That was the first little win. I then enquired after some smokeless fuel and he produced one of only two bags he had left and said we could have it for free as it was already opened and I was such a regular customer! Win number 2!
We were preparing to leave when Elaine reminded me to ask if he undertook jobs such as stern gland packing (packing is a fibrous material wrapped around the prop shaft to keep the water out and it wears out over time). He answered in the affirmative. Not only that, his mechanic Gaz was on site (some holiday boater had filled the gearbox of a holiday boat TO THE BRIM with oil!) and would pack our stern gland right then. Gaz did the job in full tutorial style, left me some packing so I could do it myself next time and only charged me £20. All in all, a great way to start the day.
We made our way to Sale under the same conditions as the previous day, i.e. Into a strong wind under bright sunlight. We tied up on the arrow straight one mile run, just beyond the Waterside Arts Centre
and dined out at Borello, a fairly new Italian restaurant nearby. A couple of drinks after that and we were done.
Today it's more provisions from Tesco then on to Dunham, where we'll stay put for a couple of days to get some jobs done.
